I'm Proton Guru (PG Solutions LLC) founder Rhett Smith. I got my chemistry training at the University of Toledo (B.S.), Case Western Reserve (Ph.D.) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (NIH Postdoctoral Fellow), and I have been a professor of organic chemistry at Clemson University since 2006.

I have created this free online organic chemistry class to increase accessibility to knowledge and to help everyone who is trying to adapt to our increased reliance on online learning. This is a complete organic chemistry class, with an online textbook, mini-quizzes after each lesson for self-assessment, traditional lecture videos, and a lot of teaching through solved problem videos. I hope that this online course will be as straightforward and helpful as possible.

How to use this Site

Basically, you can just go to the Table of Contents and start the step-by-step process. From there, you can adapt the available material to your learning method. When you would like to study a topic, click on the link. Each link takes you to a Lesson page where you can study the topic. Each lesson page generally includes:

A short reading lesson, usually with a couple of solved example problems.

An online, timed mini-quiz of about five multiple choice questions so you can self-assess your understanding of the reading.

A lecture video to cover the high points of the reading

A free response question video, with explained solutions, ranging from relatively straight-forward to quite challenging as the course goes on.

I will continue to add supplemental worksheets, practice problems, and more useful resources, especially as I (hopefully) get feedback from instructors and students!

Students and instructors: please email me (rhett@protonguru.org) if there are topics that you need to learn or want to see covered but that I don't currently cover on my site, so that I can continue to improve this course for everyone!
